These are all out on DVD, since I am way to cheap to go to a real movie in a real theatre.
I'm going to Start with a little controversy:
Religulous
There was once a time in my 20's when I watched Politically Incorrect and thought that Bill Maher was entertaining, but then again I was uninformed and self centered. Now I am a 30 something and self centred.
I only watched this out of boredom, I wasn't sure what to expect, I have endured Michael Moore films, How Bad could it be?
Its not so much a comedy or documentary as it Life according to Bill Maher . And I suppose If I had a budget and a fun Camera Crew I'd love to go around the world mocking the things I believed ruined Humanity ... Snow, bananas, mosquito's, really the list goes on....
I will admit that I skipped through the movie, not really watching it. This is mostly because I can't find anything enduring about Maher (either here, or RealTime, or when he pops up like a weed on CNN's LarryKing. He's kinda the opposite of Horatio "H"Caine (of CSIMiami), H being an annoying Hero, while Maher is an annoying jerk.
Lots of screen time was carefully chosen & given to "crazy" people (including the overplayed Cruise & Travolta clips & old ladies) who look even crazier if you add tittles to the bottom of the screen as they speak & pump in some funky music. The Edit was excellent, he is able to make his point often with a video clip of what Maher perceives as the fruit of Religion, a clip of war, 9/11 or a hypocritical minister. The segments between locations & targets is Maher sharing his religious experiences as a child, and his self congratulatory spirit on overcoming it (note to self... must make Primary more fun!!!). I finally turned it off after Maher played his Scientology is the Worst Religion in the World Card.
And you maybe Screaming at the screen "Hey Annie!! You are LDS, they are ripping you guys apart, duh... you're not going to like it"
And I'd reply " Ummm (insert eye roll) yeah... I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it, but that was probably the draw. I was just disappointed that they went with the same old, same old. I was hoping he could at least come up with something new to bash me with, but he didn't... booooring!!! "
I realized that I haven't addressed the Content of the movie? There is little. Its not like Maher is a scholar and has to get word out to everyone, that Religion is ruining everything. Obviously most of his questions & follow ups are leading, with a dramatic punchline. I would be interested in 2 things, the raw material, and what were the criteria for the people he interviewed. This is more of I think Religious People are stupid, and if they can't see that they are stupid, then well that makes them even stupider. (insert his I'm smarter than everyone else chuckle).
Anyway, If you love Bill Maher, Hate Religion of any type then This is the best way you can spend 101 minutes.
I'm off to watch "Nights in Rodanthe" After Maher, I may actually enjoy Gere.
