Mahlon has been extra attentive towards the mail. It was like he was waiting for something. Dale asked him about it, and sure enough he was waiting for his money.
"what money?"
"from the government"
"What?"
insistent "my money, from the government, I'm waiting for my money"
With a little quizzing, turns out his friend (who would be an older kid from the playground) had clued Mahlon in about the Carbon Tax Rebate Cheque sent to every resident of British Columbia, and Mahlon was waiting for his Cheque.
And when he found out his Mom already Received his Cheque, he felt a tad ripped off.
